It is Monday morning. A product manager discovers that a weekend ImpEx import introduced data corruption on 47 SKUs — and that orders were confirmed with incorrect pricing for six hours before anyone noticed. The fix is the easy part. The real question is the one the IT director will be asked in the post-incident review: how do we make sure this never happens again?
ImpEx imports are one of the most common causes of silent production incidents on SAP Commerce Cloud. A zero-price product or a broken category assignment introduced by an overnight import can sit live for hours, because the monitoring stack watching the platform does not understand commerce data. This is not a tuning problem. It is a structural one — and it has a structural answer.
Why ImpEx errors are invisible to your monitoring
Standard APM tools monitor infrastructure health: response times, error rates, CPU, memory. They have no concept of commerce data validity. They cannot detect a zero price, a missing product image, a broken category assignment, or a promotion rule carrying incorrect discount logic. The tools are monitoring the wrong layer — and so a whole class of production incidents stays entirely invisible until a customer complaint, a manual spot-check, or a revenue anomaly surfaces it, usually hours after the import ran.
For a mid-market SAP Commerce Cloud environment running regular ImpEx imports — catalog updates, product additions, promotion configuration, price changes — that is a recurring production risk that infrastructure monitoring is structurally incapable of addressing. No amount of server-health green ticks will tell you that 47 products are priced at zero.
Prevention: the ImpEx Validator
Synapse's ImpEx Validator runs before any import reaches production. Ten static rules cover SAP Commerce Cloud ImpEx syntax and structural integrity — missing INSERT/UPDATE/UPSERT keywords, malformed headers, hardcoded credentials, wrong date formats, missing catalog version references, unsafe REMOVE statements without filters, localisation attribute mismatches, macro ordering, and unique-key column placement. Then a Claude AI semantic review checks for logical issues the static rules pass — commercially nonsensical prices, promotion configurations that are technically valid but likely wrong, and semantic mismatches between header and data rows.
The output is a simple go/no-go recommendation with the specific issues flagged, and it is accessible from the Synapse developer toolbar without leaving the platform. The validation happens at the one moment it is cheapest to act on a problem: before it reaches production.
Detection: the Catalog Integrity agent
Validation before execution catches most issues, but not all. Some problems only become visible after the data is ingested and processed: image-rendering failures, cross-reference issues between newly imported products and existing category trees, and promotion conflicts between new rules and existing active ones. The Catalog Integrity agent monitors continuously via the OCC REST API, detecting zero prices, missing descriptions, and bad category assignments within minutes of an import completing.
The Validator prevents what it can foresee; the Catalog Integrity agent catches what it could not. Together they eliminate the class of incident behind most SAP Commerce Cloud data corruption.
Why this matters at scale
ImpEx incidents carry real costs: engineering time to identify and fix the corrupt data, customer-service impact from orders taken at the wrong prices, and, in some cases, promotional liability from misconfigured discount rules. For organisations running regular imports across large catalogs, this becomes a recurring expense that infrastructure monitoring alone cannot prevent. Prevention and real-time detection flip the economics from reactive remediation to proactive protection.
Both tools are available from the earliest stage of Synapse onboarding, before the AI baseline period is even complete, so they deliver value on day one rather than after a learning curve. For an organisation whose primary pain is ImpEx error prevention, these two capabilities alone justify the platform investment — and they answer the question from the post-incident review directly.
Prevent the next silent ImpEx incident
The ImpEx Validator and Catalog Integrity agent are available from day one of a Synapse trial — before the AI baseline period is even complete. Validate your next import before it reaches production.
